I have enjoyed working as a respiratory Therapist for 14 years. Before graduating from respiratory school, I was given the opportunity to in the NICU and has loved it ever since. Working in a level 3 NICU has given me a great foundation in my career. In addition, I have worked as a clinical instructor for a community college, lead respiratory therapist in the NICU, transport therapist, clinical coordinator/educator, in addition to working as a staff pediatric, nicu, and adult therapist. My new career journey is a manager of a cardiopulmonary department.

As the Lead Respiratory Therapist in the NICU, the job duties included scheduling, chart auditing, lead meeting, precept new respiratory therapists and nurses, organize in-services, and supply ordering and inventory. In addition, attend high risk deliveries, ventilator management, including high frequency ventilation and nitric oxide, intubate, internal and external transports, ensure the blood gas lab was functioning properly and following proper guidelines, and was a part of the decontamination team.

The respiratory therapy duties that are required are teaching patients and/or families how to care for the patient, which would include ventilator management, troubleshooting the ventilator and/or trache tube. The types of patients are pediatric patients with that would include those that need to transition to home care due to a life-altering event (TBI, rehab, etc), chronic conditions, and obesity. Other duties include staff ventilator management, BIPAP/CPAP management, pulmonary toiletry (cough assist, vest therapy, IPV), blood gas draw, general respiratory therapy, Bubble CPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, trache care, trache tube change, and fit testing.
