About

After graduating from Biochemistry at the University of British Columbia in 2009, Anthony Tam joined the team of Dr. Don Sin as a M.Sc. student in Experimental Medicine at the center for Heart and Lung Innovation at St. Paul's Hospital, during which he identified a potential mechanism by estradiol regulates MUC5AC protein synthesis in human bronchial epithelial cells. He then transferred directly into the Ph.D. program to continue his training in exploring sex differences in lung physiology and its mechanistic link in cigarette smoke-induced airway remodeling in a preclinical model of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Airway remodeling and mucus hypersecretion are two important clinical phenotypes of COPD. For largely unknown reasons, women, in particular, are biologically susceptible to COPD. He was previously involved in discovering novel therapeutic targets for COPD using an integrative genetic-genomic approach to discover novel pathways in COPD. Currently, he is working on lipid nanotechnology in screening different formulations for tissue-specific delivery in-vitro and in-vivo in search for novel therapeutic applications in human diseases. Recently, he is enrolled in the BCIT Associate Certificate program in Foundations in Occupational Health and Safety, and the VCC Provincial Instructor Diploma Program. He is an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in violin performance and also a violin instructor teaching the Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus to students of all ages. He is also a mentor for the UBC InSTEM Mentorship Program and a reviewer editor for the Journal Frontiers in Network Physiology. * Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a complex, heterogeneous disease characterized by irreversible airflow limitations most commonly associated with cigarette smoking. * COPD is the 2nd leading cause of morbidity and mortality in North America. * None of the current pharmacotherapies for COPD effectively modify its natural history or mortality. * Very few new classes of medications have been developed in the last two decades to treat COPD. * There is a pressing need in discovering new therapeutic targets for the debilitating decline in lung function in patients with COPD.

Why are women more susceptible to COPD? One potential mechanism for this sexual dimorphism was revealed in the latest research article published in American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (AJRCCM) entitled "Sex differences in airway remodeling in a mouse model of COPD".
