Dealing with development control, policy and enforcement issues at three local authorities.

During my time with Cory my role morphed from planning and EIA to PFI procurement, so after securing a number of planning permissions including two entirely new landfill sites, the latter 5 years were spent project managing various large (£800M+) municipal waste PFI bids.

My first time working for a small private company, including land remediation, major housing development and landfill. Following the sale of the business to Cory Environmental, I moved to Cory to continue managing the Ibstock Brick portfolio.

A short spell only in corporate head office, the latter stages were exciting as we were working on the merger of Bardon with Camas to form what became Aggregate Industries.

This was a single project role - project managing the first Development Consent Order application in Wales to be accepted by the (then) Infrastructure Planning Commission. The project involved a 67MW (energy from waste) power station fed via rail-linked transfer stations throughout Wales, and exporting heat as well as electricity. Complicated by the fact that the site was located in the largest opencast coalmine in the UK, which had its own issues. It was a real challenge to manage such a complex project whilst the whole DCO process was still in its infancy, but although the team was quite small it was very focussed, making the experience (generally speaking) very enjoyable.

For me, this role was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I was brought in whilst the business was still known as Wimpey Hobbs to be their first planning manager, an appointment that was timely as the business was having to adapt to ever-increasing planning controls and environmental awareness. The role and geographical remit expanded over time, eventually including Scotland, Ireland and the Czech Republic as well as the 'heartland' of Wales and England. I was fortunate enough to be able to bring in a team of geologists, environmental managers and estates surveyors to manage all aspects of quarry and business development, and led the team through an active period of development including acquisitions and mergers.

* Heading up planning at RDW, where we work with farmers and other landowners to bring forward a range of renewable energy projects - solar (5MW * wind (0.5MW * hydro and biomass. We are a small (select) team so work with consultants, contractors and other partners to bring in the best expertise for each project. Our main focus is Wales, but we do work on projects in England too.
