2003-7 - 2006-1 · 2 yrs 7 mos

I established a new fuel cell research group developing new materials for high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Responsibilities included commissioning new testing equipment, and establishing experimental protocols, testing procedures and reporting formats. Working with a test bench manufacturer, I was responsible for driving the development and iterative improvement of a custom-made high-temperature fuel cell test bench. Once the testing was established, my role focused on the development of innovative composite membranes incorporating nano structured metal oxides. IMRA Europe is part of the AISIN SEIKI group, and I was also responsible for managing information and technology transfer to the wider AISIN SEIKI group.

Research associate working in Loughborough University's Chemistry Department for Nation Power on their Regenesys system. The work involved managing a research project looking at the catalysis of reactions to improve the performance of the Regenesys system. The work involved developing methods to rapidly screen catalysts and also how to improve the structure of the electrodes used.

2012-7 - 2016-2 · 3 yrs 8 mos

I managed the Ink and Deposition Development (IDD) team. IDD was responsible for the development of printed catalyst layers and membrane components, including defining manufacturing processes and ensuring these were compatible with the high volume manufacturing required. The components developed by my team have been instrumental in creating innovative and commercially successful MEA products. I was also responsible for managing strategic MEA architecture projects to design and validate next generation products and processes for high volume manufacture. This project delivered working prototypes compatible with manufacture at scales an order of magnitude larger than currently possible with no loss of performance compared to current designs.

I manage a wide range of demanding internal and external stakeholder relationships, while retaining a focus on overall project delivery and driving product innovation. I oversee multi-faceted customer-focused projects from the development stage through to launch, managing internal JM teams and leading technical interactions with customers. The project management employs an integrated New Product Introduction (NPI) process (covering design, production, and QA/QC functions) and risk management tools such as Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) on both the design and processes used. As a new product introduction champion I have played a key role in the implementation of a new company-wide NPI process, leading one of the first products to be developed using this process and driving and supporting wider uptake of the process across the business.

I have been an MEA design scientist at JMFC for seven years during which time I have held several different roles within the company. I am current leading the Ink and Deposition Development group. This group is responsible for developing all of the new ink and printed products for the company. I am also the MEA design lead for the DMFC MEA product range. Previously I managed the MEA design group which had responsibility for specifying products for customer enquirers and developing new products in conjunction with key customers.
