Andrzej Gortat

Educated in Poland, Andrzej practiced his craft in several design firms in Europe and in Canada before joining ZAS. His design talent and creativity shaped many of the firm’s most successful projects: London Airport Passenger Terminal Expansion, McGregor Park Library in Scarborough, Peel Police/Transport Canada office at Pearson Airport and Bill Crothers High School in Markham. Andrzej’s extensive experience crosses a multitude of project types at all design and construction stages. Under his leadership or design direction ZAS have completed numerous challenging assignments in educational and community facilities (Jaffari Community Centre, Vaughan), corporate offices (Honda Canada Campus, Markham; Staples Business Depot HQ, Richmond Hill) and residential complexes (Masarykpark Homes, Scarborough; Boutique Condominiums, Toronto), just to name a few. Attentive to his clients’ needs, Andrzej is equally comfortable sketching design concepts and administering complex construction; he quickly identifies and creatively resolves key project issues. His work style follows the conviction that successful architecture requires a lofty vision and, more importantly, a team committed to its execution. Andrzej thrives in multi-stakeholder, multi-task environments. He has most recently managed ZAS’s work on a number of complex P3 initiatives including Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel (completed 2015), Light Rail Vehicle Maintenance/Service Facility in Scarborough (cancelled by Metrolinx) and York University Athletics Stadium for PanAm Games. He has also led multi-disciplinary design teams through all stages of design-build projects like Burnhamthorpe Library in Mississauga (2012), Gyptech HQ in Brampton (2013) and University of Waterloo Science Teaching Complex (2015), in each case delivering design excellence within established budgets. His diverse practical experience and extensive knowledge of the industry makes him an integral part of ZAS’s leadership and studio.
