Research Fellow
University of Durham
★ Two-year research project dealing with the development of the UK opencast [surface] coal mining sector. A wide range of articles, journal papers and innovative working papers on opencast coal mining and related issues were compiled during the project. The research work also focused on the impacts of opencast mining on various communities in England, Wales and Scotland. ★ The post-project research work culminated during 2000 with the publication of the book "Digging Up Trouble" [with Beynon and Hudson]. The book examined the complex subject of environmental planning in relation to broader concerns of political economy and local culture. The chapters examined a series of key themes: the public and private sectors in the UK coal sector; environmental protest and politics; the early years of new social movements; landscape and the environment and local politics. "Digging Up Trouble" is still essential reading for anyone researching into this subject.

Research Associate
University of Newcastle upon Tyne
★ Building upon the PhD research - this two-year research project examined the Development of the Opencast Coal Sector in the North East of England. Research included a detailed analysis of the planning applications and public inquiries that were taking place during this period - which were used to assess the impacts of the then planning system for opencast mining developments. A range of papers and articles were published during and after the project based on the conclusions of the research work. Articles and papers included joint work with Rutherford and Peart [Northumbria University] and William Fischer [Coal Trade Statistics].
Education

Thesis: "Future Strategies for Coal in the United Kingdom"
This PhD project had a long and complex timescale. The PhD was eventually awarded by the University in 1987. The [second and final] External Examiner was Dr Eric Wade [who actually read the thesis - in comparison to the PhD supervisor, who shall remain unnamed]. The thesis examined [from the perspective of 1985/86 and in the light of the year-long miners' strike] the current state and potential development of the UK coal sector and coal technologies. The thesis was a comprehensive alternative policy assessment - providing scenarios and forecasts on a range of topics for the period to 2000. It recommended that the then Conservative Government produce a political and economic package - a new "Contract for Coal". Such an approach could have provided the UK coal sector with a more viable future. The thesis provides a valuable historic assessment of the UK coal sector and contains a large volume of technical data and references which are now probably unavailable.

Envronmental Technology
I was a student during the third year of the MSc course - and took the Energy Policy Option. My thesis was an examination of Combined Heat and Power/District Heating [with emphasis on legal and institutional requirements for the development of the sector in London].

Human Environmental Studies
This BSc environmental science course is no longer in existence. It contained a range of units - commencing with foundation material and subsequently covering more advanced subject areas which dealt with human impacts upon the global environment. I specialised in my final year in course units and project work which covered key aspects of the built environment. I was glad that King's College London didn't change it's name in 2015.
