PRA are primarily involved in consultancy work for major housebuilders such as Shepherds, Millers, Barratt, and Portford. They produce sketch layout schemes, and follow them through Planning, and the working drawing stage. They also worked on private domestic extensions, which often involved on site surveys. I was also responsible for the in-house CAD standards, and produced procedure documents and drawings to support all company employees.

FSP is an architectural practise with a very broad range of clients, including North Yorks Police Dept. The MOD, British Waterways, and Peugeot. As a junior technician I assisted with all general office duties, as well as producing planning and working drawings under supervision. I was involved in work on domestic extensions, and bespoke one off schemes, as well as police stations, car garages, dog kennels, aircraft hangers, shops, and even a Ghurkha temple!

Hazel Homes are a small housebuilders situated on the outskirts of Wakefield. They deal with developments up to around 50 units in size which includes houses and apartment buildings. As the only technician, my responsibilities here included planning and working drawing production, along with site liaison and problem solving with detail drawings, co-ordinating with engineers information etc to very pressured timescales.

DWA is a large architectural practise in the centre of York with a wide ranging clientele. Care homes form the majority of the workload, and are undertaken for clients such as Lifestyle care, Avery, and Bupa. I have been responsible for working alongside the main project architect to produce working and planning drawing packages. I have also produced coloured photoshop sketches for feasibilities, and attended site meetings. I have also attended a wide range of CPD seminars and training whilst working at DWA.

McCarthy & Stone is Britain s leading retirement home builder, with offices throughout the UK. They build large scale apartment buildings for the elderly, with communal facilities such as laundry, and buggy stores, and a house manager. I have been responsible for producing working drawings, dealing with on-site teams as well as NHBC conditions, liaising with external consultants, and other (internal) departments. I have also produced and coloured planning drawings to submit for planning approvals.

As mentioned below – McCarthy & Stone build retirement apartments and assisted living apartments for the over 55’s. I have gone back to the company after a few years away to take up the same position as a technician with more responsibility for job-running and on site input. Since being promoted to senior, I have furthered my learning as much as possible by attending numerous training courses, including topics such as Fire safety in design, CDM regulations for designers, and First aid. I have also joined CIAT as an associate, hoping to quickly upgrade this to full membership.
