Experience

Head of Data Science, Shopify Finance
Lead an amazing team of ML engineers, economists, data scientists, software engineers, and data engineers, responsible for a hitting the most financially impactful data topics at Shopify. A few examples: Building a cutting edge ensemble and its customized component methods (ranging from "traditional" statistical methods to more recent Deep Learning-centric models) to forecast Shopify's Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV), the most important input into Shopify's P&L, in turn unlocking a large array of scenario analyses for the Finance Team. Building dynamic causal inference pipelines (largely Double Debiased Machine Learning-focused) to estimate the indirect benefits of Shopify Capital and other product offerings to our merchants, and in turn incorporating those into investment algorithms. Building LLM-based tools and related UIs to allow R&D credit opportunity identification amongst Shopify's various documentation (e.g. GitHub repos, internal websites, etc.), prioritization scoring, and CRA form drafting. Enhancing commercial marketing Lifetime Value (LTV) models to provide more accurate and granular estimates, allowing for proper financial discounting (largely XGBoost-based models).

Director, Technical Product Management, Data Science
Building the future of AI/ML in Finance! Lead and coordinate the product roadmap for our Team of the Future. This includes working across data science, data engineering, product engineering, and finance. Major projects led or contributed to: -Leveraging machine learning to automate forecasting of our P&L, scenario-generation, confidence intervals, monthly variance analysis, and key strategic financial decision optimization. -Working to align our meta data enhancement strategy with Google's roadmap to facilitate natural language querying and automated dashboard generation. -Implementing anomaly detection and general engineering rigor across our data architecture, with emphasis on our externally reported metrics and key business KPIs. -Creating and leading training that covers SQL, Looker, Python, Machine Learning, and Econometrics for our team to constantly upskill. -Process automation via systems integration, API management, and Python training for individual teams. -Ad hoc analysis regarding our macroeconomic environment, 5-year capital structure, growth opportunities, and review of LTV:CAC forecasts.

Director, Corporate FP&A
Greater Boston
Selected by CFO to lead Corporate FP&A, in large part in effort to bring data science and data automation to Shopify FP&A. Worked to develop forecasts of various aspects of Shopify's P&L using several machine learning methodologies (e.g. FbProphet, XGBoost, more "traditional" econometrics time-series) and ensembles thereof. Supported a broader "Finance Automation" workstream to maximize the availability of high granularity finance data. Led more "traditional" Corporate FP&A activities of forecasting, reporting, and special projects including capital structure planning, supporting corporate restructuring, supporting major acquisitions/diverstitures, and more.

Head of Strategic Finance, Shopify Fulfillment Network
Greater Boston
Lead team of former strategy consultants and investment bankers responsible for 5-year strategy, strategic research, and long-term financial modeling of Shopify Fulfillment Network. Got to pair my finance background with my data science background by aligning my team's competitive strategy work with Network Design efforts performed by the Operations Research Team to frame SFN's long-term go-to-market and operational strategies, as well as long-term product roadmap and related research. Based on this framing, work closely with Product Acceleration (Corporate Development) on all acquisitions, investments, and strategic partnerships for SFN, from target identification, investigation, due diligence, and integration. Support Shopify Corporate FP&A and related teams (e.g. Control, Capital Markets) in Shopify's broader capital planning and structuring decisions. Examine financial strategies where applicable for SFN (e.g. real estate and equipment financing arrangements). Responsible for working with Investor Relations and SFN product leadership to support all Shopify Earnings and Board updates.

Associate Director, Network Strategy

Promoted early to Associate Director. Built team that worked to inject sophisticated data science (e.g. machine learning, econometrics, and operations research) methods into Wayfair's algorithms. Examples include: Dynamic algorithms to quantify cost-speed trade-offs in delivery selection/inventory placement, leveraging beta-binomial-centric regression metrics to fuel pricing algorithms that dynamically listed low return/CLV-negative SKUs, applying GBM methods to lead-time estimation, and creating more rich ensembles for demand/capacity forecasting.

Senior Manager, Operations and Supply Chain
Wayfair
Greater Boston Area
Led a mixed team of data scientists and MBA (former consultants) that attacked data-intensive problems, starting with Lost-in-Transit, but moving quickly to SKU delistment.
