Andrew Goodhead
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer @ Paddington Robotics
About
I am a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with over 9 years of experience in robotics, industrial automation, aerospace, and special-purpose machinery. Currently at Paddington Robotics, I deliver advanced mechanical design solutions for high-performance robotic platforms, taking prototypes from R&D through to scalable, production-ready systems. Previously, at MBDA, I was Technical Lead on the ASRAAM air-to-air missile system, driving the design and development of mission-critical defence hardware. At Dexory, I developed autonomous scanning robots for logistics automation, including a major redesign of the lifting system that increased operational life fifteenfold. At Karakuri, I contributed to the creation of smart robotic kitchens, delivering precision electromechanical systems for food automation. Earlier in my career at KW Special Projects, I worked across high-performance sports, automotive, and industrial automation projects, with a strong focus on precision engineering and complex system integration. I hold a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London and have extensive expertise in engineering design, CAD (Creo & SolidWorks), manufacturing, R&D, and project management. Passionate about solving complex engineering challenges, I thrive in multidisciplinary environments - driving innovation, reliability, and performance from concept through to production.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
London, United Kingdom
• Designing and optimising advanced robotic platforms, taking prototypes from R&D to scalable, production-ready systems. • Delivering mechanical design solutions for complex electromechanical assemblies, focusing on reliability, manufacturability, and ease of assembly. • Collaborating with AI/ML, controls, and electronics teams to integrate mechanical solutions into high-performance robotic systems. • Applying DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, and design reviews to ensure product quality and longevity.

Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - ASRAAM Technical Lead
• Technical lead for the ASRAAM air-to-air missile system, driving mechanical design, development, and integration to meet stringent performance, reliability, and manufacturability targets. • Contributed to the Meteor weapon system, delivering key design solutions to complex engineering challenges. • Utilised Creo for 3D modelling and Windchill for PLM, managing complex mechanical assemblies and ensuring seamless integration with cross-disciplinary systems. • Performed tolerance analysis and supported DFMEA activities, improving product reliability and reducing manufacturing risks. • Supported environmental testing and qualification, ensuring compliance with rigorous defence and safety regulations.
Mechanical Design Engineer
London, England, United Kingdom
• Designed and developed key systems for Dexory’s autonomous scanning robot — the tallest freestanding robot in the world — used to automate warehouse inventory tracking. • Led the redesign of the tower lifting system, increasing operational life fifteenfold by optimising load distribution, improving durability, and enhancing cycle performance. • Applied concept design methodologies and advanced CAD modelling to transform ideas into manufacturable engineering solutions. • Produced detailed engineering drawings and documentation for manufacturing, ensuring accuracy and ease of production. • Collaborated with electronics and software teams to integrate mechanical systems seamlessly into fully autonomous platforms.

Mechanical Design Engineer
Karakuri
London, England Metropolitan Area
• Designed and brought to market smart robotic kitchens, integrating automation into food service to improve efficiency, safety, and consistency. • Developed safety-critical human–robot interfaces to protect operators and ensure compliance with safety standards. • Engineered food handling and dispensing mechanisms that improved throughput and reduced waste. • Designed automated transport systems, including conveyors with integrated weighing systems for precise portioning. • Created hot holding equipment to maintain optimal food temperatures during service. • Produced robust machine frames to ensure long-term durability in demanding commercial kitchen environments. • Applied concept design, CAD, DFM, numerical analysis, prototyping, and detailed technical drawings to deliver manufacturable, cost-effective solutions. • Managed BOMs and collaborated with suppliers to ensure quality and timely delivery in a fast-paced startup setting.

Mechanical Design Engineer
• Designed and delivered a range of automation and special-purpose machinery projects across high-performance sports, automotive, and industrial sectors. • Created innovative subsystems including efficient paper transport systems, user-friendly HMIs, powder handling and compaction systems, linear transport mechanisms (conveyors, ball screws, and belt-driven systems), print head integration and ink management systems, and efficient radiant heating systems for consistent performance. • Applied concept design, CAD, DFM, numerical analysis, prototyping, and detailed technical drawings to produce innovative, functional, and manufacturable solutions. • Led multiple engineering projects with budgets exceeding £1M, delegating tasks, managing client relationships, presenting to stakeholders, and chairing multi-party project meetings. • Collaborated with suppliers, clients, and partners to secure over £200K in new business for the company. • Contributed to award-winning designs, including International Design Awards (IDA) Gold – 1st Place in Office Equipment, and the A’ Design Silver Award – highest award level in the Pre-Production Category.

Undergraduate Researcher
London, England, United Kingdom
• Designed and manufactured a custom training aid for Paralympic swimmer Andrew Mullen, enabling improved race starts and performance. • Conducted a full design process from concept through multiple prototype iterations, incorporating athlete feedback at every stage. • Collaborated closely with the athlete’s coaching and support team to ensure the solution was functional, safe, and competition-ready. • Delivered a final device that was used by the athlete in preparation for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, contributing to his medal-winning performance.
