Literature faculty member, tenured, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in 19th century British literature; Literature Programs Coordinator since 2005. Recent book: Architectural Identities: Domesticity, Literature and the Victorian Middle Classes (University of Toronto Press, 2010). Currently co-editing a four-volume set of primary documents on children and empire for Routledge Press. Research interests include travel and colonialism, 19th century childhood, identity and Britishness, development of the novel.

English Department faculty, teaching courses on 19th c. British literature, with particular interests in travel and empire, gender, and notions of Britishness. Additional focus on the humanities in public conversation, the value of a degree in the humanities, public humanities scholarship. Currently on the MLA Committee on Academic Freedom Personal Rights and Responsibilities. Served as president of Midwest MLA 2013-2014, and on its Executive Committee from 2011-2015.
