Strategic Advisor: Environmental Health, Substance and Ingredients expertise

About

Ziff is a substance and material expert. At MADE SAFE®, she created a 360 degree, scientific approach to determine if substances, ingredients, materials and/or their chemical inputs are safe for humans and ecosystems. Using a hazard based approach and exercising the Precautionary Principle this Ecosystem Process prioritizes health and disrupts the usual practice of evaluating products without sufficient scrutiny to individual inputs. With the MADE WISE Certification™ the team is leveraging a gargantuan list of Banned List ingredients in order to create change by getting clean, green and eco-minded companies to eliminate some of the most harmful chemistries in commerce. Amy consults with Companies at every stage to ensure that products are better, safer and healthier. She can provide a detailed roadmap so they can publicly share their efforts or guide in execution through delivery. Her work in pioneering the MADE SAFE® certification as the most rigorous and meaningful differentiator for truly better products has inspired companies around the globe to do better. Now, with the expansion of the MADE programs her work can help move the entire marketplace away from harmful ingredients, impacting the global supply chain, brands and retailers -- ultimately making it easier for millions of people to make healthier choices and use their purchases to support safer products for people and the planet. As a healthy living advocate and mother to three teenagers, Amy has long understood the public health crisis in the United States. We are raising the first generation of children who are less healthy than their parents. The cost of “chronic diseases” from ADHD and neurological issues to auto-immune issues and diabetes, to allergies and asthma, are crippling. Cancer rates are expected to impact 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. It’s time to exercise prevention and do the things that you can control. Ziff's work empowers individuals to take steps to help themselves, even in a marketplace with few protections. She is determined to help Moms and kids reduce their body burden for increased wellness that lasts a lifetime. With GOOD HOUSEKEEPING and Hearst Amy launched the #raisethegreenbar Summit in 2017, designed to inspire corporate innovation around sustainability and health. Ziff is a “Woman to Watch by WELL Insiders and Made Safe was named Nonprofit of the Year at Shiftcon in 2018. Specialties: Healthy Living advocate, Ingredient Expert. Nontoxic living practician. Mom. Speaker. Writer. Native Plant lover. Kitchen gourmet hack.

Nontoxic Certified (NTC) is a nonprofit that advocates for safe and sustainable substances in everyday products and guides companies towards better ingredient use for ecosystem-sound products. We leverage the marketplace as a powerful change agent. We know that the most successful companies of the future will provide products that are safe for humans and sound for our environment; hence the 360-degree ecosystem-sound approach we take to evaluating substances. We help companies craft and improve products for a more sustainable future working in a circular economy ensuring that products deliver against ESG or CSR goals and metrics. Through measurable, scientific data-driven insights, our team is able to partner with companies to develop a formulation (or reformulation) roadmap. Tactical steps are deployed in accordance with a company’s mission and strategy. To do this work, NTC uniquely deploys the Ecosystem Approach considering all sources of pollution including air, water, soil, sediment, aquatic life and terrestrial life. Additionally, it reviews chemistry classes, supply chain practices, and renewable sourcing practices. This evaluation process for all inputs is what provides true ingredient insights so that companies may understand the implications of ingredient selections prior to use and/or when making changes in existing products. By doing this work we flip the current chemicals first, consequences second practice existing in the US. We empower companies to do better and consumers to buy safer. We work with companies at every phase and stage to provide a roadmap for making better substance and ingredient choices with tools to benchmark and share progress and accountability with stakeholders and consumers. We've certified over 3,000 products, worked with 100+ companies, consulted to global brands and helped launch thousands of products in the marketplace. We are part of Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly program, Wayfair sustainability and more.
