Alejandro I. Maass

Assistant Professor @ Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

About

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and an Adjunct Researcher at the Cyber-Physical Systems Research and Technology Center (CPS-RTC). My research focuses on networked and wireless control systems, with particular emphasis on how communication constraints, such as delays, packet losses, and stochastic effects, impact stability and performance. I am especially interested in applications to intelligent transportation systems, vehicle platooning, and large-scale cyber-physical systems, combining tools from control theory, hybrid systems, and optimization. I received my Ph.D. in Control Theory from The University of Melbourne (Australia) in 2019, and my undergraduate and M.Sc. degrees in Electronic Engineering from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (Chile). Prior to joining UC, I held academic and research positions at the University of Melbourne, UTFSM, and Universidad de O’Higgins. I enjoy collaborating across disciplines and working at the intersection of theory, communication networks, and real-world cyber-physical applications.

Analysis and design of networked control systems, whereby the plant and controller exchange information over a communication network. The goal is to exploit the structure of the network (e.g. multiple channels or protocols), plant (e.g. distributed or singularly-perturbed) and controller (e.g. distributed controller implementation) to achieve robust stability, estimation and tracking. Examples from intelligent traffic applications will be used to test the obtained control/estimation algorithms.
