Graduate Research Assistant @ UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health

About

My name is Allison Baumgartner. I am a PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina, on the infectious disease track. I find joy in working on questions that advance maternal and child health. My work sits at the intersection of rigorous causal inference, epidemiological methods, and community‑centered public health. I care deeply about producing evidence that is not only analytically sound, but also meaningful to the people and organizations who rely on it — communities, policymakers, clinicians, researchers, and public health agencies. Thoughtful analysis, clear communication, and the belief that data should support real‑world decisions guide my training and research.I began my public health journey as a biostatistician, earning my BSPH in Biostatistics from UNC Gillings with minors in chemistry and music. With a passion for community engagement, I continued my education as an MPH student at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, focusing on Global Health Epidemiology. During my time at Michigan, I served as Student Body President for the School of Public Health and conducted research across epidemiologic and health behavior disciplines. Those experiences taught me that public health is both a science and a practice — grounded in relationships, trust, and collaboration. Across research, leadership, and community partnerships, I’ve seen how meaningful change happens when evidence and lived experience inform each other. That belief guides my work today and shapes the kind of epidemiologist I’m becoming.

I worked as an active team member assisting the UNC Gillings Cardiovascular Epidemiology Department by writing a data processing workflow for a future genome-wide association study (GWAS). I attended bi-weekly meetings discussing the coding progress, wrote and edited script to represent the needs of lab team, and was the primary contact with the university’s ITS team for assistance optimizing parallel code jobs on the super computer.
