Alice Tang
Associate Engineer @ National Grid
About
I am a senior at Vanderbilt University majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Environmental and Sustainability Studies. I am passionate about advancing sustainability with my engineering skills. My areas of interest include clean energy, utilities, green buildings, and building energy efficiency. I am a board member of the Vanderbilt University Green Fund, a $150,000 annual budget dedicated by Vanderbilt to funding student proposals that make the university more sustainable.

Experience

Mechanical Engineering Intern
Nashville, Tennessee, United States
• Assisted senior engineers with three projects: an electric vehicle battery plant, an electric vehicle factory central utility plant, and a tire plant • Researched and suggested an electric 5-ton hoist and trolley after finding that a client’s request for a manual hoist and trolley would be impractical for lifting pump equipment 40 ft from a truck bed • Participated in internal process design meetings for the battery plant’s electrolyte piping systems • Sourced corrosion-resistant control valves; compiled a valve detail list for a submittal • Revised Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) in AutoCAD Plant 3D

Research Assistant
Dong Miniature Robotics Lab
Vanderbilt University
• Created a fabrication process for silicon rubber models of microdiameter vessels. These models were used to test the lab's miniature robots. • Designed and 3D printed a laser pointer holder, endoscope holder, and trachea model stand for the lab's experimental setups.

Engineer
• Learned about the different subsystems of a racecar as part of a 10-person Formula SAE team • Designed and fabricated a footrest; gathered design criteria from the driver and created a simple, cost-effective design • Researched ways to increase car speed by reducing drag caused by the radiator; learned and applied aerodynamic theory

Programming Department Lead
Army Ants FIRST FRC Robotics
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a program where students work as a team to design, build, and program a 120-lb robot each year for competition. As the leader of the 10-member programming section, I managed task coordination, strategy, and logistics for the programming section, as well as training new members to program the robot in LabVIEW and Java. I additionally led three outreach camps to teach girls and underrepresented minorities robotics and programming principles.

Outreach Lead
Army Ants FIRST FRC Robotics
I designed curriculums for and led 3 camps designed to teach robotics to underprivileged minorities in STEM. I also mentored 24 other educational robotics camps, totaling 270+ hours of robotics-related community service.
