About
The human genome is the biological code that specifies human-beings. My overall vision is to decipher that code in order to understand and predict interventions that restore individuals to a healthy ground state. I pursue this through various applied genomics roles including; Professor at The Scripps Research Institute, Director of Genomics and Genome Informatics at the Scripps Research Translational Institute, VP of Bioinformatics and Genetics at Actio Biosciences, and as an expert witness, scientific advisor, and consultant. My research covers a broad range of areas centered on the use of genomic technologies to identify the genetic etiology and underlying mechanisms of human disease in order to define precision interventions at the individual-level. Major focus areas include human genome interpretation, genomic discovery of novel rare diseases, comprehensive, genetically-informed machine- and deep-learning prediction of risk for common diseases, and digital communication genetically-informed disease risk. I have authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications with over 10,000 citations in this space. I obtained a B.S. Chemistry at Stanford University, and PhD Biomedical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, (in record time) under the mentorship of Dr. Nicholas Schork. In 2008, I joined the Scripps Research Translational Institute as a Research Scientist , and shortly thereafter as an Assistant Professor of Molecular and Experimental Medicine. In 2012, I advanced to Director of Genome Informatics at SRTI and full Professor in 2021. I was also co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Cypher Genomics Inc - acquired by Human Longevity Inc in 2015. Co-founder of Preciseli and VP of Bioinformatics and Genetics at Actio Biosciences.
