Throughout my journey at sea, I built strong expertise in tanker operations, engine room management, and compliance with MLC, STCW, ISM, and SIRE 2.0 standards. The 2nd Engineer on board tanker vessels plays a critical role in managing and maintaining the engineering department. Their responsibilities include: 1. Operation and Maintenance of Machinery: Overseeing the daily operation and maintenance of main engines, auxiliary engines, generators, and other machinery like boilers, pumps, and compressors. Ensuring smooth running of the engine room systems, including the power generation and distribution systems, and propulsion systems. 2. Fuel and Lubrication Systems Management: Managing fuel oil and lube oil levels, ensuring correct transfers, treatment, and usage. Maintaining the fuel system’s efficiency, including monitoring the purifiers and separators. 3. Safety and Environmental Compliance: Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, particularly regarding emissions and ballast water treatment. Overseeing procedures for handling and disposing of waste oils, oily water, and sludge. 4. Planned Maintenance System (PMS): Executing the planned maintenance schedule for machinery and equipment, ensuring that all machinery complies with classification society requirements. Keeping logs and records up to date for all maintenance and repairs. 5. Bunkering Operations: Assisting the Chief Engineer during bunkering operations, ensuring that fuel oil is loaded safely and without contamination. 6. Emergency Duties: Participating in emergency drills and managing engine room emergencies such as machinery breakdowns, fires, or leaks. Assisting in firefighting and oil spill response, given the nature of tanker operations. 7. Supervision and Training: Supervising the 3rd and 4th Engineers, as well as the engine room crew. guiding them on maintenance tasks and daily operations. Training junior engineers and crew in operational safety and machinery handling. 8. Cargo Operations Support: Assisting with cargo operations, such as maintaining cargo pumps, and ensuring proper operation of inert gas systems.
