Alessandra Harrison

As a Research Lead within Shell’s Digital Team, I combine my expertise in project management and programming to drive projects that bring AI into the oil and gas sector. I work with cross-functional R&D teams from universities and technology partners to create digital solutions that drive innovation and operational excellence. Prior to joining Shell, I undertook a diverse research journey, specializing in the exploration of nanomaterials through electron microscopy. This amazing technology, which images materials using high energy electrons, has enabled me to see atoms and delve into a world which is invisible to the naked eye and even traditional microscopes! I’ve had the privilege of working at some of the world’s top research institutions, including the Paul Drude Institute in Berlin, CEA Grenoble, the University of Birmingham, and Berkeley Lab. My research combined experimental work with extensive programming for image processing and data analysis. The topics ranged from semiconductor materials (fundamental to modern electronics!) to advanced renewable energy technologies such as fuel cells. Outside of work, I enjoy taking macro photographs (the blue dragonfly in the background is one of mine! :P) and I have a deep interest in understanding social issues and supporting initiatives that contribute to creating a more equitable world.
