senior director optical and system engineering
ciena
Led 8-10 person optical and system engineering team that designed Cienas flagship DWDM metro-regional transport platform (CN4200), including optical engineering rules, optical network analysis, optical interface specifications, optical component evaluations, optical amplifier circuit packs, tunable and fixed wavelength optical transponder modules. - Led the design of variable and fixed gain optical amplifiers. Contributed to the hardware architecture, fast transient/constant gain control algorithm and circuitry, software interface specification, manufacturing procedure, and optical testing. - Contributed to the architecture for the 10 Gb/s transponder (10GbE, OC-192, FC1200) and aggregator circuit packs, and 10 Gb/s optical transponder module subassemblies. - Contributed to optical architecture, feature set, and subsystem specifications for Cienas next generation reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) for the CN4200 platform.

founder, chief scientist and vice president optics
internet photonics
Co-founded company focused on bringing Ethernet to the Optical Core: contributed to the business case, venture capital and customer presentations, organizational structure, hiring, infrastructure, product roadmaps, features, schedules, and more. Contributed in many ways to the successful acquisition of Internet Photonics by Ciena Corporation for $150 Million in 2004. - Directed a group of 6 engineers to develop optical system engineering rules and optical products for low cost, high performance dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) optical transport systems. - Directed the development of the optical amplifier and 10 Gb/s DWDM optical transmitters and receivers. Directly contributed to the electrical and optical component specifications and selections, control algorithms, logic (VHDL) design, software interface specifications, and manufacturing test procedures.

nokia
Demonstrated the first (pre-standard 10GbE) native Ethernet transport at 10 Gb/s. Contributed in all phases of the project including initial conception, planning, design, testing, and customer presentations. - Designed custom Fiberchannel interconnection fabric. Designed arbitration logic, messaging and data-path subsystems. Mapped these subsystems to a field programmable gate array (FPGA). Wrote a packet routing simulation program to calculate throughput, delay, and queue depth as a function of packet length, average and peak traffic loads, packet arrival times, and interconnection fabric sizes.
