About

An experienced technical researcher and engineer specializing in building energy-efficiency and indoor comfort at the Institute of Sustainable Building Materials and Engineering Systems. Holding a PhD in Building Energy Efficiency from Riga Technical University, I have led and contributed to advanced research initiatives on an international level, with particular focus on sustainable building performance, indoor climate control, and energy optimization. My expertise has been strengthened through international research fellowships at the University of Washington (Seattle, USA) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), as well as extensive collaboration with industry leaders, research institutions, and public sector partners across multiple Horizon Europe and ERDF-funded projects. As a Lead Researcher & Engineer at RTU’s Institute of Sustainable Building Materials and Engineering Systems, I am currently actively involved in multiple international projects on building energy efficiency and energy optimization. This includes the SMARTeeSTORY project (Horizon Europe), where I contribute to developing intelligent building automation solutions for historic non-residential buildings in collaboration with 12 European partners. With a total budget exceeding €6 million, the project focuses on enhancing building energy performance through AI-driven automation and control strategies across demonstration sites in Latvia, the Netherlands, and Spain (www.smarteestory.eu). Additionally, I am engaged in Skills4DECA (Digital Europe Program - DIGITAL), where RTU is the leading partner in a €5.5 million initiative aimed at advancing Housing Decarbonization Skills for Climate, Health, and Job Creation (www.skills4deca.eu). This project is funded by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HADEA0).

Lead researcher and Engineer within the framework of the EU Commission funded Horizon Europe project SMARTeeSTORY and as a Partner and responsible instructor in the Digital Europe Programme project “Housing Decarbonisation Skills for Climate, Health and Jobs” – Skills4Deca. SMARTeeSTORY focuses on developing integrated, interoperable, and user-centred building automation and control systems to improve energy performance in non-residential historic buildings. The initiative is demonstrated at Riga City Hall (Latvia), TU Delft Faculty of Architecture (Netherlands), and the Royal Chancellery of Granada (Spain). As a lead researcher within the SMARTeeSTORY project, my direct contribution involves: 1] Simulation and modeling to assess theoretical performance parameters for intelligent control systems in historic buildings. 2] Data collection and system implementation, focusing on indoor climate conditions, automation strategies, and energy efficiency improvements. 3] Selecting and integrating smart control solutions, including sensor networks and adaptive automation, to optimize energy management (with collaboration and support from our project partners). Skills4Deca aims to create a comprehensive portfolio of e-courses to strengthen skills for the green transition. The courses cover building energy efficiency, renewable energy, smart housing, circular economy, digital twins, and blockchain in design and construction. My role in this project is the responsible instructor for Solar Energy Design and Simulation course. As of July 2025, I have startedconducting postdoctoral research on dynamic (climate-responsive façades), with the objective of optimising building energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality through adaptive envelope solutions.

Lead researcher and Engineer within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) project 1.1.1.1/21/A/010 "Optimal Control of Indoor Air Quality and Thermal Comfort Based on Room Real-time 3D Motion Scanning Data" My direct contribution as a lead researcher within the framework of the research and collaboration work between RTU and “Komfovent” Latvia included the following activities: A classroom environment was dynamically simulated using specialized software to determine theoretical operational parameters for an intelligent control system. Real-life measurements were conducted in classrooms, focusing on indoor climate quality (IAQ), window opening schedules, and human behavior under varying conditions. I was directly involved in selecting the necessary hardware for implementing potential window control solutions integrated with 3D scanning. Based on simulation results, I contributed to the development of system improvements and the installation of a fully operational prototype in a real classroom to collect data and validate system performance. The project's outcomes have the potential for broader implementation in public and residential buildings, especially where space constraints limit ventilation options. This system could also enhance natural ventilation by autonomously monitoring indoor/outdoor parameters, opening windows when conditions allow, and temporarily deactivating mechanical ventilation. The project was executed through collaboration between RTU’s Institute of Sustainable Building Materials and Engineering Systems, the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Systems Engineering (providing IT expertise), and the commercial partner SIA "Komfovent". I was also responsible for presenting project results at the ASHRAE renowned 17th Asia Pacific Conference on Built Environment (APCBE), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2023.
