Alejandro Tirachini Hernández

Professor TU Braunschweig, Universidad de Chile. Civil Engineer and MSc in Transport Engineering, Universidad de Chile (2007). PhD, Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS), The University of Sydney (2012). Formerly Associate Professor University of Twente (2023-2025) and Visiting Professor (Humboldt Fellow) TU Munich (2019). My main research interests are the design, planning and operation of public transport systems (bus, rail, ride-pooling) in multimodal settings and the study of emerging mobility technologies (automated vehicles, shared mobility platforms) from a sustainable mobility perspective. I have worked on transport research projects applied in Chile, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore and Mexico. I was Associate Editor of the Journal of Public Transportation (2019-2024) and co-editor of the Handbook on Transport Pricing and Financing (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2023). Invited several times as specialist to give presentations to the Transport Commission of the Lower House and the Senate in Chile, over bills under discussion concerning public transport subsidies, ride-hailing platforms, traffic safety and fare evasion in public transport. I have served in the Experts Panel of Chile’s Ministry of Social Development, for the analysis of improvements to the methodology of cost-benefit assessment for transport projects, in the Experts Panel of the Ministry of Transport to improve the understanding of fare evasion in Santiago’s public transport and in the Experts Panel of the government’s MAPS Initiative (Mitigation of Climate Change and Low Carbon Development).
