I’m Dr. Albert Takem, a board-certified physician and founder of AfroFit, a wellness media and education brand focused on weight loss, nutrition, and mental health for Black communities across the globe—from Sub-Saharan Africa to the Caribbean, the U.S., and Canada. As the medical director of Maryland Primary Care & Wellness, I’ve treated thousands of patients living with obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic illness. But I’ve also seen a major gap: most wellness solutions ignore the cultural realities of Black people. That’s why I created: • The AfroFit Podcast – culturally grounded, no-nonsense conversations about health, weight loss, food, and lifestyle • The African Diet Guide – for people who eat traditional African meals • The Optimal Diet Guide – for African Americans and others in the diaspora who eat a more Western-style diet • The Soul Food and Caribbean Diet Guides (in development) My work blends medical insight with cultural fluency, making Black wellness practical, powerful, and personal—without judgment or fluff.
