About
Mathematics educator Dr. Akihiko Takahashi is the President of the Board of Directors of the Lesson Study Alliance and Professor Emeritus at DePaul University, where he dedicated twenty-one years to teaching mathematics and mathematics education. Prior to his academic career, he accumulated nearly two decades of hands-on experience with Lesson Study as a classroom teacher and teacher leader in Japan. After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he transitioned to a role as a mathematics teacher educator and researcher. He has since supported schools and educators worldwide, striving to enhance mathematics teaching and learning through Collaborative Lesson Research—a form of Lesson Study he co-developed with his colleague. His extensive research in mathematics education has led to the publication of over 80 journal articles and book chapters, focusing on teacher professional development and the application of Lesson Study in both English and Japanese.

The mission of Lesson Study Alliance, Illinois 501(c)(3) corporation, is to promote and support the effective use of lesson study to improve K-12 teaching and learning, especially in math and science. Lesson study uses the planning, teaching, observation, and discussion of a live classroom lesson as the engine of professional growth. It has a long history in Japan and is being used by a growing number of schools and school districts in the U.S. and around the world.
