In my opinion computer science is one of the most creative disciplines. With CS skills we can create elegant solutions for businesses, program rovers to explore Mars, make video games, help explore the genome, or create the tools necessary to make 3D movies. As someone who enjoys learning new practical skills and solving complex problems I really enjoy flexibility this field offers. The ability to challenge the limits of my creativity in the pursuit of an elegant (or simply working if there are major time constraints) solution to a problem is something that brings me a great deal of personal satisfaction. While I enjoy all aspects of computer science my primary focuses are in software engineering and web development.

During my tenure as a graduate student in computer science I taught two classes. For the first I served as a lab instructor for CSCI 205 (Programming Languages). For the second I was given the opportunity to teach my own class for CSCI 100 (Intro to Programming). I remember this second teaching experience the most fondly. The students challenged me to provide clear explanations of sometimes complex computer science theory (which from the end of year reviews I appear to have excelled at). I really enjoyed helping them better understand the field I love. Furthermore my interactions with them made me a better computer scientist. Sadly I was forced to exit graduate school after my second semester due to financial difficulties, but the enriching experience of being a teacher remains one of my happiest memories as a student.

Most of my work has involved building APIs in a microservice environment using the Python-based Tornado web server. The goal of the projects has been to create a series of automation APIs that empower the operations and support teams to more quickly identify and resolve application and infrastructure problems. Most recently I've been working on a team that's building a critical frontend application using an almost MEAN stack (ExpressJS, Angular2, and NodeJS but no Mongo). This application will be the primary interface that the Operations teams will use to utilize the previously mentioned APIs.

I currently work on the Core Search API team. Our duties include working with Apache Solr and the .NET framework to create/maintain the search API layer used (directly or indirectly) by every team at CareerBuilder. Because of our position in the application stack we also sometimes perform more infrastructure-like duties. This has given me a substantial knowledge of various deployment tools like Chef and Jenkins as well an intermediate to advanced knowledge of Amazon Web Services based deployment and effective Virtual Private Cloud deployment strategies.
