Intern
Shiselweni, Eswatini
The Nyakuza Bridge Project is a 128-meter pedestrian suspension bridge spanning the Ingwavuma River, connecting the communities of Emanyonyaneni and Nsizatje in Hosea Inkhundla, Shiselweni Region. It is currently the longest pedestrian bridge in Eswatini. Before its construction, residents had to wade through the river to access essential services like schools, hospitals, and markets. This was dangerous year-round and often life-threatening during the rainy season, when flooding made the river nearly impassable and led to tragic fatalities. Our team partnered with Engineers in Action, local masons, and community members to design and construct the bridge, improving year-round access to critical infrastructure and enhancing safety, education, and economic opportunity. Over the course of a year, we developed engineering plans before traveling on-site for construction. I served as Media Manager, overseeing videography, documenting the project’s progress, and managing social media outreach. Through this experience, I gained hands-on skills in infrastructure design, field construction, and cross-cultural collaboration while living and working in rural Eswatini.
