The Perk Lab

The Perk Lab is a cutting-edge Laboratory for Percutaneous Surgery. Our lab is dedicated to advancing the field of medical interventions involving the placement of surgical instruments, including needle-based aspirations, injections, ablation therapies, and more. Our multidisciplinary environment fosters collaboration across computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and clinical sciences. Students and postdocs at The Perk Lab gain expertise in medical image analysis, machine learning, surgical robots, and clinical ergonomics, among other essential skills. We emphasize translating these technologies into clinical trials, exposing our students to the world of medical imaging and clinical sciences. With a strong industry partnership, we focus on innovation, intellectual property, and commercialization, with over 20 patents and inventions to our name. Our lab is a recognized leader in open-source image-guided intervention research software and collaborates globally. We're part of numerous collaborative groups and consortia, with unique opportunities for our students to work with world-class partners, including the renowned Johns Hopkins University. Our faculty members' diverse appointments provide a wealth of interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities. The Perk Lab thrives through collaborations with Queen's University's Biomedical Computing and Intelligent Systems Groups, as well as the Faculty of Medicine. Our clinical connections span Surgery, Anesthesiology, Urology, Pathology, Radiation Oncology, and Emergency Medicine, making us a pivotal player in advancing medical education technology.
